Chennai:
Chennaites could be able to take a Metro from Chennai Central to Airport by the end of this year if all goes well, according to a Chennai Metro Rail source.
Chennai Metro is planing to complete the work on the 22km stretch of second corridor by the end of this year.
“We are planning to complete it by November or December. This could mean the hub of long distance trains as well as suburban trains linking Chennai to Thiruvallur and Gummidipoondi could get access to Chennai Metro, which will link them up to Chennai Airport,” said the metro rail official.
Interestingly, this could boost the patronage of Chennai Metro as it will be able to link passengers from far off places and also those living in the North Chennai.
However, all eyes are on the opening of the underground stretch from Nehru Park to Koyambedu Metro station. “The underground stretch will open as per the schedule in the end of March or beginning of April. Our focus now is to give finishing touches and restore the roads and parks,” said the source.
Meanwhile, the detailed project report to build and design the Central Square which encompasses important landmarks of Chennai City such as Rippon Building, Victoria Public Hall, Central Suburban Station, Chennai Central Station, Southern Railway headquarters building, Madras Medical college, Rajiv Gandhi Government Hospital, Park town, MRTS station, Park station and the Ramasamy Mudaliar choultary will be ready by 2017.
Catering to 5,00,000 pedestrians per day, Chennai Central is situated at intersection of six rail corridors passing through the city - one MRTS, three suburban and two upcoming Metro rail corridors.
