Chennai:
In a bid to ensure safe water supply
in the city, Metro Water on Thursday cautioned residents to avoid purchasing
untreated water from private suppliers.
Metro Water managing director Apurva Verma asked people to
avail the Dial for Water services to ensure safe supply of drinking water.
“Treated water will be supplied
through tankers across the city. The cost of 6,000 litre water is Rs 400 while
the cost of 9,000 litre water is Rs 600,” he said.
People can avail of this facility by
contacting the 24 hour service line 45674567 or their respective area
engineers.
He said Metro Water is taking
measures to supply quality treated water on cost basis to needy residents.
This comes in the wake of reports surfacing that
migrant workers fell ill after consuming untreated water which was bought from
a private firm lorry. Two migrant labourers have died, and at least 40 were
taken ill with diarrheoa and vomiting, allegedly sickened by the contaminated
drinking water their employers were providing them with.
