TN govt to provide Rs 250 a day to kin of missing fishermen

Chennai:
The state government has assured that it will be providing Rs 250 a day relief package to the families of five missing fishermen from Enayamputhenthurai of Kanyakumari district, according to South Asian Fishermen Fraternity.
Addressing a press conference here on Wednesday after meeting  the Fisheries and Fisheries Development Corporation minister K A  Jayapal, SIFR general secretary Churchill said that the fishermen have been missing since June 7, 2013 after leaving the Thengapattanam fisheries harbour in a fiber boat Daniel Thomas.
Churchill said that there are about 239 uninhabited Islands in the stretch and sought the knowhow of shipping ministry in searching the fishermen.
He said that in the last 20 years, around 200 fishermen from Kanyakumari district alone have been reported missing. He demanded that the government should include experienced fishermen in the search operation for missing fishermen.
He said that Kanyakumari region requires a coast guard unit and a helipad and speed boat. This should be based on Colachel in Kanyakumari district to rescue the missing fishermen.
