The stage is nearly set for the maiden test run of Chennai’s first metro train with the laying of 800 metre test track in the Rs 198 crore state-of-the art metro rail depot in Koyambedu.
A Metro rail spokesman said that the laying of test track in the yard has been completed but other works are still pending.
“Currently, some electrical works besides laying of cable is going on which is necessary before the test run gets a green signal,” he said.
Interestingly, the depot has been bustling with activity with metro rail workers working day and night to finish the work. However, officials are yet to ascertain when the trial run would begin.
Meanwhile, the laying of the bridge or viaduct in the elevated stretch is 95 per cent complete and metro rail officials are gearing up to finish the challenge of connecting the link from Kathipara to St Thomas Mount. The signaling work is also expected tom be completed by December.
The work on the eight stations in the elevated stretch is nearly over. Except the finishing works all the other works, including testing, is expected to be completed by September or October, sources added.
