After 13-year hiatus, India revives Iran’s Chabahar port deal to enhance energy security

Chennai:

After a 13-year hiatus, Union Shipping Ministry is trying to revive an
old agreement with Iran for modernization of Chabahar Port and it is
likely to get the nod of the cabinet in the next 15 days, according to
Union Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari.

Addressing a televised Press Conference from New Delhi, the minister
said that the agreement was signed during the tenure of Atal Bihari
Vajpayee government with Iran for the development Chabahar port by
India for faster import of natural gas, urea and fertilizer.

“Nothing has moved on that proposal for 13 years. A cabinet note on
the subject will be floated and we expect it to be cleared in next 15
days,” Gadkari said.

A joint venture between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) and Kandla
Port will modernise this port in Iran if plans get approval. This will
also be the first port outside India which will be set up by domestic
ports.

To a query over the fate of Port-Maduravoyal project, Ennore-Manali
Road Improvement Project (EMRIP) and Inland Waterways project in
Chennai, the minister said that talks are underway to break the
deadlock.

“Without the state government’s support, we can’t carry out the
projects. I have asked National highways department to hold review
meeting with the chief secretary and Highways secretary. There is a
communication and it will be sorted out,” he said.
