Metro Water orders probe into death of two persons in Kodungiyur STP


Chennai:

Chennai Metro Water has ordered an enquiry into the death of two
persons in a sewage treatment plant in Kodungiyur on early Saturday.

A Metro water spokesperson said that four persons were working on a
sewage treatment plant being operated and maintained by VA-Tech Wabag.
The incident occurred at around 4.30 am while operating a valve in the
primary clarifier.

During the operation, the spindle rod was cut due to which there was
immediate gushing of water along with gas in the valve chamber. Two
persons died while one sustained injuries. The fourth person managed
to escaper without injuries, the spokesperson said. “Further action
will be taken based on the enquiry report,” the spokesperson added.

Meanwhile, Safai Karamchari Andolan has condemned the death of the two
employees. D Samuel, the state convenor has urged the government to
implement The Prohibition of Employment as Manuanual Scavengers And
Their Rehabilitation Act, 2013.
