Ennore Port drops plan to develop freight corridor along ORR; Looks at alternate rail route to link Bangalore

C Shivakumar
Chennai:

Ennore Port is now planning an alternate route to connect to Bangalore
after Tamil Nadu government rejected the proposal to develop freight
corridor along Outer Ring Road.

Ennore Port chairman and managing director M A Bhaskarachar told
Express that they have appointed a consultant to develop a alternate
route to link Bangalore with Ennore Port after Indian Railways and
state government found the plan to develop the rail link along the
Outer Ring Road not feasible.

Ennore Port had sent in a proposal to the state government provide
rail linkages from Nandiambakkam to Avadi and extended it up to
Vandalur at the request of the state government. The proposal was to
use proposal to use 22-metre strip of land across the Outer Ring Road
for rail link between Ennore Port and Nemilichery.

Bhaskarachar said that it was found out that the proposal could not be
carried out as there would be lot of bridges, crossovers as well as
gradients along the stretch.

It was also not feasible as the stretch has steep curves,”
Bhaskarachar said. He also said that Ennore Port has initially put
forth the proposal as it would provide connectivity between Ennore and
Mumbai, Bangalore and the rest of the state.

Meanwhile, CMDA is planning a grid of roads along Outer ring road to
develop it as a potential area to absorb the future growth of the
city. Sources said the  authority has already accorded permission for
developments along the Mudichur and Palanthandalam villages. The plan
to have grid of roads along the Outer Ring Road is being taken as a
pilot project.
