Direct shipping service between Chennai-Yangon on Oct 1

Chennai:

A direct shipping service between Chennai and Yangon would be launched
on 1st week of October, according to Union Shipping minister Nitin
Gadkari.

Addressing a televised press conference from New Delhi, the minister
said that this will boost the trading ties between both the countries.
It is believed that the sea link will strengthen economic ties for
land-based trade worth about billions of dollars.

State-run Shipping Corporation of India is likely to deploy a 1,200
TEU (twenty feet equivalent unit) vessel, which will connect the ports
of Colombo, Chennai, Krishnapatnam and Yangon.

Sources told Express that the shipping  service is likely to begin from
October 1 from Chennai Port’s first container terminal managed by DP
World.

Interestingly, it will be inaugurated by Gadkari with to officials
from Ministry of External Affairs and Union Commerce Ministry also
being present on the occasion.

The port rotation service would be Chennai-Krishnapatnam-Yangon and
Colombo. The reason to include Colombo in the service is mainly due to
the abundant opportunity for transshipment boxes from Colombo towards
Chennai and Krishnapatnam, sources said.

The minister also announced that Tamil Nadu along with other states
like Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh will feature in the new government’s
scheme of developing ship building sector
