New causeway planned for pedestrians linking Chepet Lake bund with Poonamallee Road

The 15 acre Chetpet lake is likely to become a popular destination for
Chennaites in the next 15 months as fisheries department authorities
plan to develop it with facilities for sport fishing, boating,
multi-level car park, a causeway for pedestrians, restaurants,
children’s park and seafood court.
As desilting and dewatering work is nearing completion in the lake,
Fisheries department sources said the structural works in the lake
would start in the first week of October.
Currently, the structural design for the six floor multi-level car
park is being prepared by Indian Institute of Technology, Madras. The
design for multi-level car park is likely to undergo changes depending
on the site.
One of the civil engineering contractors at the site said that plans
are also on for building a mall. “This depends on the design by the
architects,” the contractor said. Fisheries department officials
declined to comment.
Officials are also planning to build a causeway between Dr Gurusamy
Bridge, on McNichols Road across the Cooum River connecting Chetpet
with Nungambakkam, and Chetpet Lake Bund.
“This causeway is only for pedestrians and not for motorists,” a
fisheries source said.
To a query on whether they are waiting for the design to start the
structural works, a fisheries department source said that they already
have a design in place. “It has to be vetted by the project management
consultants and architects,” the source said.
The initial structural work would be to wall the entire premises
before starting other works. “The site will also have a sea food court
besides two restaurants. It also has two openings. One will be used
for boating and another for sport fishing.” The source said. “We are
also planning to have a Island linked by bridges,” he said. He said
the bunds will have space for jogging as well as walking.
