Metro Water’s underground sewage scheme awaiting Centre’s nod for funds

Underground sewage network schemes in newly added 10 local bodies is
awaiting approval of funds from the Centre under the new National
Urban Renewal Mission which is being formulated.

A senior Metro water official told Express that they are awaiting for
approval of funds worth Rs 400 crore from the Centre to carry out the
underground sewage network schemes in Manali, Chinnasekkadu,
Edayanchavadi, Sadayan Kuppam, Kadappakam, Karambakkam, Manapakkam,
Injambakkam, okkium-Thoraipakkam and Jaladianpettai.

Sources said that projects under Urban Development Ministry may take
time as the Centre is planning to frame new guidelines under National
Urban Renewal Mission.

Meanwhile, Chennai Metro water is planning to prepare a detailed
project report for taking up sewerage network projects in the 12 local
bodies that was added recently. These include Puzhal, Nandambakkam,
Mathur, Vadaperumbakkam, Kottivakkam, Palavakkam, Neelankarai,
Theeyambakkam, Madipakkam, Nerkundram, Semmenchery and Uthandi. A
Metro water official said the project is likely to be taken up during
next financial year.

“The preparation of detailed project report would be taken up after
finalization of land required for the construction of sewage pumping
stations,” the official said.

Meanwhile, Chennai Metro water has provided underground sewerage
facilities to two of the 42 recently added local bodies and the
schemes are in progress in 13 other local bodies.

A Metro water official said that the sewerage network schemes are
being undertaken under different components. Of the underground
sewerage schemes that are in progress in the 13 added local bodies,
Maduravoyal, Perungudi, Porur, Ullagaram-Puzhuthivakkam, Pallikaranai
and Ambattur are being taken up at a cost of Rs 333.53 crore Jawahar
Lal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission.

Sewerage schemes for Thiruvottiyur, Madhavaram and Ambattur partially
are taken up at a cost of Rs 203.60 crore under Tamil Nadu Urban
Development Project besides Meenambakkam, Kathivakkam, Ramapuram,
Sholinganallur and Karapakkam are taken up under the Chennai Mega city
Development Mission.

Meanwhile, work orders have been issued for implementation of sewerage
schemes in other five local bodies. These include Surapattu,
Puthagaram, Kathirvedu, Nolambur, Mugalivakkam and ZThiruvottiyur
(Annai Sivagami Nagar). The scheme is likely to be completed in next
30 months, the official said.
