Chennai:
Chennai’s dream of having additional 150 MLD of water at Nemelli could be realised on Tuesday as a four-member delegation from German funding agency KfW would visit the city to work out the modalities of funding the desalination plant.
Sources revealed that the KfW delegation would hold talks with Municipal Administration and Water Supply (MAWs) secretary K Phanindra Reddy and Metro Water Managing Director B Chandra Mohan to fund the Rs 1,200 crore project.
Sources indicated that KfW would be funding 60 per cent of the cost while the rest would be borne by the state. The project will benefit nine lakh people in southern and Central parts of Chennai City namely Sholinganallur, IT sector and industries in Old Mahabalipuram and East Coast Road, Velachery, Madipakkam , Ullagaram and Puzhuthivakkam, St Thomas Mount, Medavakkam, Kovilambakkam,, Nanmangalam, Keelkattala, Mylapore and Pallipattu.
Interestingly, the project has been pending for years and is considered important for the city as it would boost the water security considering the failure of monsoon for the last three years.
Sources indicated that the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), Ministry of Finance (MoF) and Union government has sent the Proposal to KfW last week, for funding after Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa wrote a letter to the Centre to speed up the process.
Sources indicated that the reservoirs have nearly dried up and water levels in reservoirs supplying water to the city dipped to a 10 year low. The only hope for the city now is the monsoon which could tide away the impending water crisis.
Currently, the city has two desalination plants in Minjur and Nemelli and they provide 200 MLD of water. Besides, most of the water is extracted from the acquifer as well as agriculture wells.
The project is likely to be implemented in the next 30 months from the date of award of contract. Interestingly, the state had earlier accorded administrative sanction to the project after delay by Centre to release funds as the New Urban Renewal Mission schemes and its guidelines were yet to be formulated by the Centre. The project was announced by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on the floor of the assembly on April 16, 2013 to meet the additional requirement of water for the expanded Chennai city.
