NGT stops dumping of debris in Buckingham Canal to construct road by developers

The National Green Tribunal has passed an interim order to stop dumping of construction debris into the Buckingham Canal by two developers. 

The tribunal consisting of Justice Dr P Jyothimani and P S Rao also directed the Kancheepuram district administration to implement the order and provide a status report.

The Tribunal passed the order after hearing a petition by N Subburaj who has alleged that developers Olympia Infratech and ECR Coastline Resorts were allegedly creating false records and are dumping construction debris inside Buckingham Canal to create 30 feet wide road inside the canal, which comes under Coastal regulation Zone.

The petitioner alleged that the developers created false records to show that there is a 30 feet wide road existing inside inside the Buckingham Canal on the Eastern boundary of their project land and Western boundary of Buckingham Canal in Navalur village. 

“The Directorate of Town and Country Planning, Public Works Department, Tamil Nadu State Coastal Zone Management Authority, the Kancheepuram collector, Tahsildar and the member secretary of Mamallapuram Local Planning Authority ought to have conducted site inspection prior to grant of approal but they wilfully failed to prevent such fraudulent action,” the petitioner alleged while demanding the planning permission be revoked.

The Tribunal has issued notices to the developers returnable by October 16
