Chennai:
The silent neighborhood in Neelankarai woke up to a bustling of sudden activity in the house of actor Vijay, whose big budget film Puli was set to hit screens on Thursday.
It was not the fans celebrating the actor’s big budget movie but a posse of income Tax officials who swooped into the bungalow located at Sea Cross Road around 8 to 9am.
An Income tax source said the raid was conducted at Vijay’s bungalow as well as in his office in devaraj Nagar behind Cariappa School in Saligramam
Interestingly, Vijay is not the lone suspect. Actresses Nayanthara and Samantha’s residences were also raided.
“It was a moderate raid carried out in 35 places in three states and it will continue till tomorrow,” said a IT source.
he said the raids are not totally related to the big budget film Puli or those concerned with the film. “ Actresses Nayanthara and Samantha don’t have any link to Puli. Their premises were raided as they evaded taxes,” said the official.
However, Puli did generate lot of interest among Income Tax officials as they had information that lot of cash was invested in the movie. It is learnt cash worth more than Rs 100 crore was inveted in the film.
While the Kochi residence of Nayanthara was raided, officials also swooped on the residence of a producer in Trivandrum.
“We also raided the office and premises of Anbu and Kalai Puli S Thanu,” said the official.
“This was a moderate kind of operation against the tax evaders,” said the official.
While the seizures could not be that huge as is being belived, officials say it could be anywhere between rs two to three crore. “a clearer picture would only emerge tomorrow” said the official.
To a query over the statement made by Samantha’s father that it is his house and not Samantha’s when reporters queried over the Income Tax raid, the official said that Samantha gave this address while filing the taxes so we had conducted searches.
