Chennai:
A meeting to bring out an amicable solution over the
attacks on Indian fishermen would be held in New Delhi later this month,
according to Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan.
Talking to reporters after dedicating mechanised coal handling
facility in Vishakapatnam Port besides
commissioning of unified command and control centre and signing of concession
agreement for upgradation of ore handling complex in the port on Friday night, Vasan
said that the meeting would involve all the stakeholders, including
representatives of Indian fishermen, state government, ministry of external affairs
and Sri Lankan government officials.
This also comes in the wake of Chief Minister J
Jayalalithaa accusing the Sri Lankan Navy responsible for the arrest of 140
Tamil Nadu fishermen and urging Prime Minister to take strong diplomatic
initiative, including intervention at the highest level.
The minister said the establishment of a unified command
and control centre in Visakhapatnam, the first of its kind among the major
ports envisages monitoring and controlling the entire gamut of port operations
in a cross functional and collaborative environment and enables monitoring of
port operations such as navigation, cargo handling, railway operations,
security and others at one central location on a real time basis.
He said the maritime agenda envisages creation of port
facilities on par with the best in the world with a capacity of 3200 million tonnes
at an estimated cost of Rs 3,000 crore by 2020. “As of now capacity of Indian
ports including major and non-major ports have crossed 1300 million tonnes per
annum,” he added.
