Develop technologies for empowerment of rural population, says Pranab

Chennai:
Greater emphasis should be given on developing suitable grassroots technologies for empowerment of rural population, according to Indian President Pranab Mukherjee.

Addressing The 28th Indian Engineering Congress here, The Indian President said true development entails composite development of the nation with progress touching all sectors and regions.

Mukherjee said development status of a nation is fashioned by its technological prowess. Like Japan and Singapore, India should leverage knowledge infrastructure to develop growth inducing technology.

Expressing concern that India’s growth rate has dipped to 5 per cent, the lowest in 10 years, Mukerjee said that the immediate challenge is to reverse the deceleration and nurse the growth path back to eight per cent plus levels often clocked by India in the past.

He also said that engineering and technology in the country should be driven by competent engineers and scientists. He said that India has a formidable set-up of engineering and technical institutions but many of them are low in terms of the standard education imparted.

“In pursuit of expanding engineering education in the country, academic excellence must be given equal priority besides the educational standards must be geared to international benchmarks,” he said.

Urging the Institution of Engineers (India) which has a wide network all over India, to set up Institute of Excellence in Engineering and Technology to create synergy between industry and academia through high quality engineering education and innovative research, he said every engineering and technical institute must make an all effort to help India develop large pool of proficient scientific and technical power.
