TN mulling on transit oriented development along metro rail corridor

Chennai:
The state government is studying a report prepared by Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority on transit oriented development, a planning trend that promotes mixed-use residential and commercial areas designed to maximize access to public transport, pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, along the 45km metro rail corridor.

CMDA sources told Express that its consultant L&T Ramboll which was asked to conduct the study along the metro rail corridor, has submitted its report. “The report is now with the state government,” a CMDA official said.

The report also delves on aspects of population density along metro corridor, growth rate of population in Chennai, Infrastructure details with respect to Water supply, sewerage, electricity, solid waste management, etc. details about MTC ridership, slums in Chennai and pollution aspects.

Interestingly, an interim report of L&T Ramboll stated that
the growth rate of population is reducing in the core city while the peripheral areas are registering higher growth rates. The report at that time lacked analytical perspective and the consultant was requested to incorporate the same in the next report, sources said.

The study looked into the mix of residential, commercial, institutional and educational areas around public transport network, including bus and rail, to increase convenience to passengers besides developing a network of interconnected streets to avoid long detours for pedestrians.
