Lighhouse to open without lunch-break during festival season, says Vasan

Chennai:

The lighthouse on the Marina would now be open longer for visitors from December 20 to January 20, according to Union Shipping Ministry.

 

Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan told reporters that the lighthouse would be open tfrom 9.30 am to 6pm for the visitors.

 

There will be no two hour lunch break during this time, the minister said.

 

He said this decision was taken in leiu of Christmas and Pongal festival when visitors would throng the beach.

 

The minister expressed his inability to extend the timing beyond 6 pm stating that it was necessary to maintain the coastal security after 7 pm.

 

He said the timings would be applicable during the 15-day Puja holidays as well as summer holidays.  It is believed that directorate general of lighthouse can accommodate only  2,500 visitors to the lighthouse per day.
