Menace of ragging in institutions impacts standards of education

Chennai:
The menace of ragging in educational institutions adversely impacts the standards of education and has to be curbed with an iron hand, according to Chief Justice of India P Sathasivam.

Delivering the 156th Annual Convocation address of Madras Univesity on Wednesday, Sathasivam said that not only students but also faculty must be sensitized towards the ills of ragging and prevention thereof.

He said every educational institute must show zero tolerance for ragging in their campus and non-teaching staff, which includes administrative staff, employees, security guards should be regularly sensitized towards the evils and consequences of ragging.

He said the mission of every university must be to infuse unique sense of purpose in every mind of the students. “Students should realize that education is not just a tool of professional success. The true social value of education includes personal empowerment as well as the ability to contribute to social welfare.Ton be successful, you must first be a good citizen,” the Chief Justice of India said.

“The duty of every university or any college does not end with producing clever graduates but it owes the responsibility to produce honest men, men who can be trusted in public and private life, men who are sensitive to the wrongs, the sufferings and the injustice of society and who are willing to accept responsibility for correcting those ills,” he said.

Delivering the welcome address, Vice chancellor of the university Prof R Thandavan said that a total of 289 graduands consisting of one D.Sc, 108 Ph.D, 60 prize and medal winners and 120 rank holders received their degrees, prizes and medals.. A total of 64,45 candidates received degrees in-absentia.

Tamil Nadu governor K Rosaiah and Higher education minister P Palaniappan were present on the occasion.
