Chennai:
Six stranded fishermen in an uninhabited Island in Palk Bay for more than 48 hours without food and water were rescued by the Indian Coastguard hovercraft on Saturday.
Coastguard sources said that a seven memeber crew had gone fishing on July 28 from South Pamban and while returning on July 31 with a 500 kg fish catch their boat capsized off Fifth Island.
Staying afloat on plastic drums for the next 24 hours, the crew managed to reach Third Island, an uninhabited Island on August one. Unfortunately, one of the crew drifted away.
Cut off from the civilization, it was only on Saturday, the fishermen were located by a coastguard Hovercraft ACV H-190 which sailed from Mandapam for coastal surveillance.
“The fishermen were in a dehydrated state and they were embarked onboard the hovercraft and provided with food and water,” a coastguard spokesman said.
All rescued fishermen were brought to the coastguard Mandapam station and after necessary medical aid were handed over to the representative of fisheries in Rameshwaram on Saturday.
