In what could be a daring attack on a Central government office, two CBI officials from anti corruption bureau (ACB) suffered grievous injuries while unearthing evidence of corruption against a Central Excise Superintendent in a bribery case in Madurai.
The officials, who apprehended Central Excise superintendent Ashok Raja at the office of Commissioner of Customs Central Excise department after catching him red handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 75,000 from a Cable TV operator Muruganantham from Nagamalaipudukottai on Friday night around 7.30pm, were in for a surprise when 10 rowdy elements attacked them before rescuing the Central Excise Of ficial along with the sepoy.
Police said the attack happened when five member team of CBI officials were engaged in recording the statement of Raja and the sepoy. The gang had entered the office premises in two wheeler and four-wheeler.
“They also tried to destroy the evidence collected against the official. We were able to secure some of the evidence. We believe that the attackers could have alleged links with the Central Excise Officers Association. It is likely that the Goondas would have been brought by Climax Raja, a retired central excise officer,” alleged a CBI official.
The local police, which is looking into the incident, believe in the involvement of a private school in the case as CBI officials have apprehended one of the school management level official. A total of 15 members have been picked up for interrogation, said police sources.
Inspector general S Murugan, D eputy commissioner of police ( law and order) Bandi Gangadhar investigated the spot. A special team has been formed to investigate the incident.
“This has been the first such incident when CBI officials were attacked in the office of the Commissioner of Customs Central Excise and Service Tax located at Bibikulam. It is a public place. This shows how deep rooted is corruption, ” said a CBI source.
The CBI officials were unarmed while on call of duty as they believed it was a Central government department and arms were not required during the trap proceedings.
