Truck terminal proposal at Sathangadu revived as govt shelves Ernavur project

After abandoning the project to have a container truck parking yard at Sathangadu Iron and Steel Market a year ago, officials are now reconsidering the site as the proposed Ernavur Truck Parking Yard that was announced in the state assembly has been shelved.

It is learnt that that the proposed truck parking yard at Ernavur mentioned in the state assembly for setting up  of truck parking yard was shelved as it is now being considered for developing housing project for flood affected families by state housing board.

This has resulted in top officials searching for alternate site in and around Thiruvallur district. Failing to find huge parcel of land, the earlier shelved proposal of having the container truck parking yard at Sathngadu Iron and Steel Market has been revived.

Spread across an area of 203 acres, the market was developed 25 years ago to decongest the George Town area by shifting the iron and steel market from there. It was a follow-up of the Master Plan strategy that was conceived in 1989. Of the 850 plots of sizes varying from one ground to three, about 700 plots have been allotted to traders. 

And it won’t be an easy task to get the land for truck terminal.. A total of 93 plots of varying sizes have been alloted in the proposed area. Of these, sale deed have been issued for three plots and construction exists in 24 plots. “the plan is to hold discussions with the allottees and seek their cooperation,” sources said.

Last year, when the project was proposed, then CMDA has objected to it stating that the land can’t e given for container truck parking yard as the project was framed to implement Tamil Nadu Specified Commodities Markets (Regulation of Location) Act, 1996.

However, now efforts are on push the Market Management Committee of Iron and Steel Market to issue denotifaction from market area and also to carry out necessary procedures as specified in Tamil Nadu Specified Commodities Markets (Regulation of Location) Act, 1996 to enable development of truck terminal
