Chennai has 30 to 40pc service tax defaulters

Do you know the service tax which you pay for availing various amenities from firms is not going to to the state exchequer and many companies are in  the list of defaulters.

A service tax official told Express that nearly 30 to 40 per cent firms in Chennai are service tax defaulters and the department is currently initiating action to recover the cash.

He says that these companies are not paying the tax which they collect from the common man to the government exchequer. “We are viewing it seriously. If they don’t pay the tax then we will be initiating legal action and they may even be arrested.

His statement comes after Chennai Service Tax department arrested one of the directors of AMS Corporate Services Private Ltd in Alandur and lodged him at Puzhal jail.

“The company has been evading service tax since October 2012and the quantum of service tax is more than five crore rupees,” he said.

Interestingly, the director of the company was let out on conditional bail after paying a sum of Rs 4 crore by principal sessions judge, Chennai. He has assured to the remaining amount within a month’s time, the official said.

It is learnt that in south chennai alone last year teh service tax collection was worth Rs 2,200 crore. “This year the target would be set only next year but we are confident that the collection would be more than 10pc,” he added.
