Chennai vying for project to promote innovation in smart cities

Chennai will be vying with other smart cities to seek Rs 5 crore worth funds for a project to promote innovation under Union Ministry of Urban Development’s plan to promote innovations under the Smart Cities Mission.

This comes after .the ministry has sought project proposal from Chennai which should be submitted by May 31, 2016 to be considered for funding under Round 1.

The idea is to provide Rs 5 crore each for a project which will focus around the needs of urban local bodies. The ministry feels it will spur innovative mindset amongst institutions of technological excellence such as training entities empanelled by Ministry of Urban Development or IITs and Indian Institute of Management. 

The projects have to be designed for a maximum period of 24 months and they should be initiated by urban local bodies or jointly with industry or institute.

It is learnt that 25 per cent of the project cost should be borne by industry prior to the project being considered for research funding. Of the proposed Rs 5 crore for the project, 40 per cent would be funded by industry, 10pc by urban local bodies and 50pc by Ministry of Urban Development.

The proposal would be considered by a committee at the Ministry of Urban Development level in June 2016 for selection of proposals under Round One. The list of selected projects in Round One would be announced in the last week of June and a maximum 10 such projects will be awarded.

The project fundiing would be released in equal half-yearly instalments in the months of April and October each year, except for the first instalment for round 1 projects which will be released upon commencement of the project. There will be a half yearly monitoring of the progress of the projects.

Objective of the project:

-- To promote innovation in areas that are directly relevant to the smart cities mission;

--- To spur an innovative mindset amongst institutions of technological excellence

--- To facilitate coordinated action between the urban local bodies, industry and academia;

-- To strengthen the research facilities and laboratories in the empaneled training entities

Project factfile;

--- The project proposals will be received on a rolling basis up to February 28, 2017;

--- All proposals submitted by May 31, 2016 will be considered for funding in Round 1;

--- A Committee at the MoUD level would consider the project proposals in June 2016 for selection of proposals. 

-- The list of selected projects in Round 1 would be announced in the last week of June 2016;

-- A maximum of 10 such projects will be awarded during the Mission period.

--- The limit of the project size will be Rs 5 crore
