TNPCB plans to form a nodal agency to regulate chemical industries

Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board is likely to get into a memorandum of Understanding with Indian Chemical Council and academia to form a nodal agency to help improve health, safety and environmental performance, according to state pollution control board chairman Skandan.

Speaking during the Appreciation Course for senior Management on Responsible Care, a programme under state pollution control board and Indian Chemical Council joint initiative for Strengthening Development and Operation of Chemical Industries, he said the plan is to make all chemical Industries become signatories for Responsible Care Programme, a global voluntary initiative of chemical industry.

It will be a voluntary effort but with mandatory prerogative, said Skandan.

He also said that the total dissolved solids in Noyyal River has come down. He said that TNPCB is taking the help of NGOs in monitoring the pollution levels in Noyyal River. His statement also comes in the wake of farmers approaching the state government with a plea for formation of monitoring committees in Erode, Tiruppur, Coimbatore and Karur for reviving Noyyal River.

R Parthasarathy, former president of Indian Chemical council and managing director of Thirumalai Chemicals, said that nearly 30 per cent of Chemical companies don’t abide by the environmental rules. He said due to such companies, the Chemcal industries which follow zero discharge also face trouble.

“The government should provide incentives for the companies which abide by the norms. They should be given preference,” he added.
