Chennai:
Metro Rail commuters can now access the Koyambedu Metro from Rohini Theatre from this week as the 141 metre skywalk is likely to be opened this week.
A contractor at the site who is giving finishing touches to the skywalk told Express that Chennai Metro Rail officials wanted the skywalk to be painted before April 14 for inauguration.
Interestingly, the construction of the skywalk was being carried above the busy Poonamallee stretch without disturbing the traffic. “Initially, pile column and Pier has been built. We used Decking sheet and then put concrete on top of it so that the traffic doesn’t get obstructed,” said the contractor.
To a query on the delay over the construction, sources said that there were certain design issues involved in it.
The lack of skywalk has been a huge problem for bus commuters, who get down at Rohini Theatre bus stop and want to commute till Alandur to access the suburban station in Guindy or CMBT bus station.
“Now passengers can safely cross the busy Poonamalee road through skywalk to reach the Metro station. It would reduce the accidents on the road,” said a traffic policeman.
Interestingly, besides the skywalk in Koyambedu, many more were planned by Chennai Metro to provide accessibility to Metro commuters. “One was planned near Guindy and another linking Udayam Theatre with Ashok Nagar station.
The skywalk or subway to provide accessibility to Alandur station for commuters on other end of GST road has been a challenge and Metro Rail officials never had the urgency to get it implemented soon.
Alandur station is an important link for Chennai Metro as it connects the Little Mount corridor and officials have to work on it fast or the planned multi-modal integration would only be on paper, said a commuter.
The skywalk in Koyambedu would also have a lift which would provide accessibility to disabled as well as senior citizens
