A Bhaba Atomic Research Centre scientist who was one of the brain behind commissioning of Land Based Nuclear Submarine Propulsion Plant at Kalpakkam was honoured with Padma Shri award by President of India at a Civil Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Sekhar Basu, who is currently the Director of Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) and also the Chief Executive of the Nuclear Recycle Board (NRB) was heading the BARC facilities in Kalpakkam since 1988.
He is one of the architects of India's 80 MWt compact Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR), which will power Arihant, the country's nuclear-powered submarine.
This shore-based reactor at Kalpakkam started operating from September 22, 2006. An exact replica of this has gone into Arihant, which hasbeen launched at Visakhapatnam.
He was also assigned the responsibility of Nuclear Recycle Programme and constructed reprocessing and waste management plants at Tarapur and Kalpakkam. A new reprocessing plant named 'Power Reactor Fuel Reprocessing Plant' has been built under his guidance at Tarapur.
He has also been involved in the international Fusion Reactor Programme, ITER, France.
