Reading habits on the wane among lawyers, says advocate general

Reading habits of lawyers have hit a low and advocate general of Tamil Nadu A L Somayaji feels this has affected the sale of journals.
Speaking during the release of the 25th edition of Tannan’s Banking Law and Practice in India, the advocate general said that reading habits of lawyers have come down and many of his colleagues are not reading the full judgement delivered by courts.
Stating that it is not in the interest of profession, he said this new trend has affected sale of law journals, especially with the volume of labour law journals coming down.
Earlier, presiding over the function to launch the book, Supreme Court Judge Justice FMI Kalifulla hailed the functioning of Lok Adalat in Tamil Nadu. He said Lok Adalat has settled 15 lakh cases worth Rs 909 crore. He also hailed the lauch of the 25th edition of the book.
Acting chief justice Satish K Agnihotri, who also spoke on the occasion, said that most of the people are getting confused with terminology while referring to Supreme Court of India. He said the usage of apex court to describe Supreme Court. “Apex Court can’t be Supreme Court,” Agnihotri said while adding that most of the judges as well as lawyers are making the mistake of referring Supreme Court as Apex Court.
chairman of the Intellectual Property Appellate Tribunal and former Madras High Court judge K N Basha also spoke on the occasion.
Tannan’s Banking Law and Practice in India, which is available in three volumes has a foreword by Justice P Sadasivam. The book highlights the current legislative position (including recent amendments introduced by banking laws (amendment) Act 2012) besides examines new issues or developments in the banking sector arising from technological developments and changing financial policy.
N V Srinivasan, the revising editor of the book and founder of his firm N V S Associates and his son Varun Srinivasan, who also helped his father in compiling the book, spoke on the occasion.
