Chennai:
The Rs 69.07-crore foodgrains market on the 14.41-acre
land next to the existing wholesale vegetable market is almost ready and is likely to be
opened after the Lok Saba elections.
The building, which
stands apart from the dilapidated Koyambedu wholesale market with its rather
imposing and neatly built structures, is likely to be opened by mid of May,
workers who are giving finishing touches to the building said.
The market is likely
to have 500 shops and the construction work is being undertaken by PSK Builders.
The market will also have provisions of godown equipped with fire-fighting
system.
Interestingly, the
scheme was proposed in 2003 to decongest central business district of George
Town where the market now functions. Sources told Express that once the market
is opened it will help residents and small businesses, who will be able to
purchase cereals, pulses and spices at an affordable cost.
The project was
delayed, in view of Environment Impact Assessment Clearance (EIA). Subsequently,
the government on June 2009 issued orders to hand over the land measuring an
extent of 30 hectares which were originally earmarked for foodgrains market to
Chennai Metro Rail for their depot-cum-allied facilities.
Later, the site
proposed for development of Food grain Market was shifted to a new location
situated on the northern side of MMC Building adjacent to ‘E’ and ‘B’ Road of Koyambedu
Wholesale market in the lands with an extent of 14.41 acre.
“The work is being completed on the given time
frame,” a source said at the site.
Currently, work is on
to concretise the road as was being done in the case of Koyambedu market. “Once
we complete the road the market is set to be opened,” the source added
