Chennai:
High tension prevailed in Madras High Court premises, which turned into a fortress with more than 600 police personnel manning the entire area from early Wednesday morning.
The issue was the hearing of suo motu contempt of court proceedings initiated against Madurai Bar association secretary A K Ramasamy and president A Dharamarajan for their ‘improper conduct’ during a protest by a section of advocated in Madurai on June 20 against the compulsory helmet rule.
Tension prevailed from early Wednesday morning when around 50 to 60 lawyers from Madurai Bar Association tried to protest in front of Madras High Court premises near the Aavin booth at around 10.30 am. They were raising slogans against Justice C T Selvam, who was to hear the contempt proceeding by alleging irregularities against him and giving out handouts. However, the crowd dispersed soon after to submit their petition to the governor.
However, it was around 1.45pm, trouble began when advocates started gathering to attend the contempt proceedings against the Madurai Bar Council office-bearers.
The court hall was barricaded and entry was restricted as per orders of the registrar general of Madras High Court. The security was fool proof and despite fervent appeals the police did not let in the advocates. As judges S Tamilvaan and C T Selvam entered the court premises flanked by policemen on both sides, the advocates shouted slogans.
Once the judges were inside, S enior counsel NGR Prasad, Lawyer-on-record for Ramasamy, addressed the protesting advocates that not allowing practicing advocates inside the court hall was against all norms.
He along with another advocate Nagasaila said that he is representing the contemnor and the police presence is preventing the lawyer on record to attend the court proceedings. “The supreme Court has emphasised on public hearing except in rare cases,” they stated.
Ayyadurai, treasurer of Labour Law Practionioners Association, blamed the Madras High court administration for the crisis. “The space in the court hall is less. They should have asked for the list of lawyers who should be present during the hearing,” he said.
As the slogans were being raised against the judges, the situation turned volatile when another group of lawyers entered near the hall and were shouting slogans against those protesting against the hearing.
The lawyers claiming to be from All India Ambedkar Advocates Association tried to counter the protesting lawyers shouting slogans against judge C T Selvam. This created tense moments but luckily no untoward incident happened.
Once the order was passed, the judges flanked by police personnel were guided out amidst the chanting of slogans.
