Chennai:
Chennai will get its second airport in Sriperumbudur once
the master plan for Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor project is
implemented, according to according to senior representative of Japan
International Cooperation Agency Ichiguchi Tomohide.
Tomohide told Express that the Greenfield airport in
Sriperumbudur is part of the masterplan perepared for developing the
Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor.
Interestingly, the project was proposed to be implemented
on 4,800 acres (1,900 ha) of land. This
also comes in the wake of a top official of Airport Authority of India stating
that the new terminals of the airport, built at a cost of over Rs 2,000 crore, could
soon reach saturation point and cannot take the passenger load beyond 2021.
However, JICA did not give any commitment on funding the
Greenfield Airport project in Sriperumbudur. “At this stage, I can’t say we
will be funding the project or not,” said Tomohide.
Interestingly, more than 20 projects have been identified
by JICA as part of developing the Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor
project.
Talking about the Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor
project, he said the project is at a planning stage. “Lot of preparation work
has to start. Firstly, the land acquisition has to start following which we
also require environmental clearance,” said Tomohide.
Interestingly, land acquisition has yet to take place in
Tamil Nadu for the project. A National Highway Authority of India source said
that the land acquisition for six-lane Chennai-Bangalore expressway has yet to
take off. “It has yet to be taken up as there is no Competent Authority for
Land Acquisition (CALA). There is a person looking after it but he is burdened
with other work,” he added.
