Chennai:
The funding of 150 MLD desalination at Nemelli, south of Chennai is likely to be finalised with the visit of German funding agency KfW next month.
Official sources told Express that the state government wants to fast-track the implementation of the 150 MLD desalination plant as water levels in reservoirs supplying water to the city dipped to a 10 year low.
Sources said that Germany has indicated that KfW Mission will arrive in Chennai on October 5 for finalizing the funds for Implementation of the 150 MLD plant in 10 acres of land. Sources also indicated that Detailed Project Report (DPR) for 150 MLD capacity SWRO Desalination Plant, at Nemmeli already has been prepared for Rs.1371.86 Crore.
The project is likely to be implemented in the next 30 months from the date of award of contract. It will benefit nine lakh people in southern and Central parts of Chennai City namely Sholinganallur, IT sector and industries in Old Mahabalipuram and East Coast Road, Velachery, Madipakkam , Ullagaram and Puzhuthivakkam, St Thomas Mount, Medavakkam, Kovilambakkam,, Nanmangalam, Keelkattala, Mylapore and Pallipattu.
Sources said that Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa wrote to Union government to expedite the process of funding for the desalination Plant. The Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), Ministry of Finance (MoF) and Union government has sent the Proposal to KfW last week, for funding.
Interestingly, the state had earlier accorded administrative sanction to the project after delay by Centre to release funds as the New Urban Renewal Mission schemes and its guidelines wer e yet to be formulated by the Centre.
The project was announced by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on the floor of the assembly on April 16, 2013 to meet the additional requirement of water for the expanded Chennai city.
