Chennai:
Entire operations in Chennai Port came to a standstill on
Wednesday due to the day-long strike by port workers.
G M Krishnamurthy, vice-president of All India Port and
Dock Workers Federation and general secretary of Madras Port Trust said that
EXIM trade to the tune of about 70,000 tonnes of cargo was affected as the
entire cargo handling and vessel movement came to a grinding halt.
“This strike is part of the nationwide strike and the
demands include implementing recommendations of successive Indian labour conferences,
the government should desist from corporatizing major ports and outsourcing of
port activities,” said Krishnamurthy.
The demand also include to pay contract worker wages on
par with regular employees, withdrawal of ceiling on productivity linked reward
and implementation of consolidation of pension benefits
