Chennai:
This month will be crucial for Tamil Nadu as it will be
ranked by the Union government on ease of doing business.
Addressing a seminar “Ease of Doing Business in India and
Tamil Nadu’ during the Global Investors Meet organized by Madras Chamber of
Commerce and Industry, Shailendra Singh, joint secretary, department of
industrial policy and promotion, said that this month states will be ranked on
ease of doing business based on the 98 point agenda for the states to comply.
Interestingly,
this is part of the effort of the Union government to bring India in top 50 of
Doing Business Report. This comes as India is ranked 140th by World
Bank in Doing Business Report.
Interestingly, Centre had given May-end deadline to
states to comply failing which the Centre would name and shame them.
The 98 points listed by Centre falls under the ambit of
state which also include labour compliance, power connection and availability
of land.
Interestingly, Centre is taking the help of International
Finance Corporation and World Bank to evaluate the performance of the states on
being investor-friendly.
He said that DIPP has shared assessment framework with
States and will rank States on Ease of Regulatory Environment.
The Centre’s requirements include quick decisions on
issues related to infrastructure and smart city projects; Special purpose
vehicle formation and stamp duty exemptions etc.
Interestingly, the state’s contribution to information
technology sector was highlighted by Lakshmi Narayanan, vice-chairman of
Cognizant Technology Solutions. He said that more 50pc of people who joined Cognizant
are from Tamil Nadu while highlighting the huge amount of skilled manpower in
the state.
Rathin Basu, country president, Alstom India and South
Asia, stressed on the need for strict anti-dumping laws.
