CCTNS key to make passport verification simple

The delay in getting the police checks done on passport applicant could soon be over if the Ministry of External Affairs plan to integrate the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network and Systems (CCTNS) project, which is connecting online records of all police stations of the country, with the passport seva application happens, according to regional passport officer K Balamurugan.

Addressing a press conference here, Balamurugan said that efforts are being taken to implement the project. However, he did not give any timeframe on when the project will be implemented.

Interestingly, this comes when the regional passport officer is taking efforts to cut down the waiting period for getting a passport to 20 days by making arrangements with the state government on police verification.

“It usually takes 25 days but we will soon reduce it to 20 days by enabling the superintendent of police (SP) office to  take printouts of personal particulars forms (PPFs) of applicants for police verification. This will cut down the time taken to send the forms through post. I have already held discussions with state government officials,” said Balamurugan.

Usually, the police is getting Rs 150 per application from the Centre for verification of records. “Some of these funds would be utilised now to make the verification simpler by providing IT infrastructure,” he said.

Meanwhile Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation (TACTV) will now help the passport applicants from the remote areas to register their passports online by paying a nominal fee.

The service will be provided at 285 e-service centres and will later be extended to 339 centres, according to managing director of Tamil Nadu Arasu Cable TV Corporation J Kumaragurubaran.

Currently, it will be provided at the e-service centre in sceretariat, 264 taluka offices and chennai Corporations zonal offices and regional passport offices in Chennai, Madurai, Coimbatore and Tiruchirapalli.

“This will cut down the middlemen,” said Balamurugan. However, to access this service, people have to pay Rs 155 extra. While Arasu Cable TV would charge Rs 100 for the service, the State bank of india would charge additional Rs 55 for using its payment gateways online,” said Balamurugan.
